Stacey Abrams is an American politician, lawyer, and voting rights activist. This 49-year-old lawmaker, who was born on December 9, 1973, in Madison, Wisconsin, is a member of the Democratic Party. Her political career started in the early 2000s and she has been involved in politics for almost two decades already. She was known for her strong advocacy for fair elections and her effort to combat voter suppression. She even founded Fair Fight Action in 2018, an organization that aims to promote fair elections, educate voters, and advocate for reforms to the electoral system.

Abrams served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017, including a period as the Minority Leader from 2011 to 2017. In 2018, she gained national attention when she ran as the Democratic candidate for the Governor of Georgia. If elected, she would have been the first African-American woman to serve as a governor in the United States.
She, however, lost to Republican candidate and Georgia’s Secretary of State at the time, Brian Kemp, whom she accused of engaging in voter suppression tactics. Despite making another bid for the governorship in the 2022 race, Abrams faced defeat once more. She once again lost to incumbent Georgia governor Brian Kemp.
Aside from being an advocate for fair elections, Abrams is also known for being a huge LGBTQ+ ally. And this led the public to ask — is Stacey Abrams gay? Let’s find out the answer to that.

Stacey Abrams’ Sexuality
During her time in the Georgia House of Representatives, Abrams proved to be a strong LGBT ally by opposing regressive and discriminatory anti-equality legislation. She stood up for equality by supporting policies that protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination. She also promotes marriage equality.
Abrams also attended the Atlanta Dinner hosted by Human Rights Campaign (HRC) — the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization — last 2022. And during her speech, she showed her full support to the whole LGBTQ+ community.
The LGBTQ+ community must know that when these elections happen not just their rights are on the line, but their lives are on the line. I was raised to believe that if the least of us is impacted then all of us is impacted. My parents would tell us ‘having nothing is not an excuse for doing nothing.’ Not being the target is not an excuse for being silent. We must fight for all. We must work for all. We must stand for all. In this moment we are fighting for our survival.”

This is not the first time that she showed her support to the LGBTQ+ community. During the LGBTQ+ Policy Roundtable Discussion in 2018, which was held at her campaign headquarters in Kirkwood, she proudly highlighted her history of opposing laws that provide religious exemptions.
It’s about protecting communities, the LGBTQ community, from being able to be fired, or denied access to housing, denied access to services. It’s about fighting back not only locally but nationally and letting the state of Georgia be a voice not of discrimination but of defense. It’s about making sure that discrimination of any kind, that from the beginning, the governor is the face of what will not happen in the state of Georgia, and that’s why I’m running.”

The lawmaker’s unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community dates back to her college years when, as a student at Spelman College in the 1990s, she actively supported the establishment of a lesbian alliance.
One of my proudest moments was as SGA vice president authorizing that organization on campus. It came at a bit of a cost. I got phone calls and threats and had to have campus security for a while. But for me, the responsibility was to do what was right, not what was political.”
Abrams recalled
Her vocal support for the LGBTQ+ community made her win the hearts of the members of the queer community. However, this unwavering advocacy also led to the rise of questions about her own sexuality, with the public speculating that her strong support for gay people came from the fact that she’s queer herself.
