However, the actor has been involved in several scandals in the past. In 1997, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, a man named Richard John Gordon blackmailed Anderson, coercing him into falsely telling the tabloids that he offered money to the man in exchange for sexual favors. Gordon, who reportedly received $100,000 from the actor, was subsequently charged with extortion.
