Lil Uzi Vert, whose real name is Symere Bysil Woods, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Uzi was considered as one of the top-20 highest-paid rappers of his generation. The rapper released their debut single “Money Longer” in 2016. The single was followed by the mixtape “Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World” which contained the hit single “You Was Right.” It attracted mainstream attention and even landed on the Billboard music charts. That somehow started their way to music stardom.
Lil Uzi Vert is not only popular for making good music. They are also the constant talk of the town because of their androgynous, gender-bending sense of style. The rapper also identifies themselves as non-binary. Thus, the them/they pronouns.
With the hip-hop artist identifying himself as such, does it mean he’s not straight? Is Lil Uzi gay? Let’s dig deeper into the subject.
VOTE: What is Lil Uzi’s Sexuality?
Being Gay in the Hip-Hop Community
Homophobia is prevalent in the hip-hop community and is apparent in the lyrics of most rap songs, where homophobic slurs are a common occurrence. Although the once political genre, which used to have little to no room for diversity, has gradually improved in the past years with regards to accepting everyone the way they are, regardless of their sexual orientation, homophobia wasn’t totally eliminated. Although less obvious, it was still there, hiding behind the words, lurking behind the bars.
This is why rappers like Lil Uzi Vert and Young Thug are considered game-changers. These rappers who don’t fit the traditional mold are here to bring the much-needed change to the music industry.
Rappers like Lil Uzi Vert and Young Thug started something which was once considered a taboo in the hip-hop community — crossdressing. As expected, rumors about their sexuality spread like wildfire. But instead of addressing the rumors head-on, they usually just let them fly around.
Fans have always believed that Lil Uzi Vert is not straight, not only because of their androgynous appearance, but also because they have been so vocal about their support for the LGBTQ community.
A Deeper Look at Lil Uzi’s Sexuality
This is not the first time that the rapper has talked about his sex life — or the lack thereof. In December 2019, Uzi also shared with their followers that they had not had sex since the end of 2018. It looked like they really meant it when they said that they weren’t just looking for sex but a deeper connection.
Unlike other rappers who were caught in gay rumors and who opted to keep mum about the issue, Lil Uzi Vert faced the issue head-on. In 2017, through their social media accounts, the rapper confirmed that they are, indeed, bisexual. That’s aside from updating their Instagram bio pronouns to them/they. These are gender-neutral pronouns that are frequently used by non-binary, genderfluid, and genderqueer persons to indicate that they do not identify as either men or women.
It was such a bold move considering the community he belongs to. But it looked like the rapper is not afraid to break the norms.
Lil Uzi’s Past Relationships
Lil Uzi Vert was in a relationship with their female stylist, Brittany Byrd. The two have been known to date since 2014. The couple seemed to be compatible in several aspects, including their fashion sense. That is evident in the bright hairstyle they both love to sport. What they had was a whirlwind romance. Unfortunately, their on-and-off relationship only lasted until 2016.
It looks like the rapper has a penchant for Brittanys because Uzi dated another Brittany after Byrd. Lil Uzi Vert briefly dated social media personality and author Brittany Renner in 2017. The short-lived relationship didn’t end well though, as Renner posted a voice recording on Instagram, accusing the rapper of cheating on her. Renner said she knew that Uzi was still “f*cking that other b*tch” — which fans assumed to be their ex-girlfriend, Brittany Byrd.
Lil Uzi Vert was also rumored to have dated American rapper DreamDoll. The two were spotted hanging around together in 2017 and that somehow started the rumor about them dating. DreamDoll seemed to confirm the rumors to be true when she posted Lil Uzi Vert‘s photos on National Boyfriend Day. However, in an interview with DJ Suss One in November 2018, she said they were never official.
The most recent public relationship Lil Uzi Vert had was with one-half of the hip-hop duo, City Girls — JT. Rumors about them dating started to circulate around the internet in November 2019. That rumor was somehow confirmed when Lil Uzi Vert posted a photo of JT on their Instagram stories. And as if that was not enough confirmation, the rapper even name-dropped her in one of their songs. As a response, JT also name-dropped Uzi in City Girls’ song “Winnin”. The relationship was, however, chaotic as there were so many issues arising between the couple, and that included Lil Uzi Vert allegedly cheating on her with a fan. The relationship, which surprisingly lasted for over two years, ended with JT calling the rapper “toxic” and “f*ck boy”.
Is Lil Uzi Gay?
Although Lil Uzi Vert only dated women in the past and was never linked to someone of the same gender before, the rapper is definitely not straight. But they’re not gay, either. Uzi identify themselves as non-binary and genderfluid. With their androgynous way of presenting themselves, the rapper is definitely a breath of fresh air in the once homophobic hip-hop community.
