In an interview with TV Guide, Nicholson discusses his role as a closeted rapper who develops feelings for Uncle Clifford, a non-binary character. His portrayal of this character sparked discussions within the Black community about homophobia and the importance of being an ally to the LGBTQ community.
We’ve had conversations about it. He’s still trying to figure it out. He’s a mix of emotions. He’s a complex and layered guy, and he’s really trying to find himself and who he is. I want people to see him as that.”
Nicholson told TV Guide
Just to clarify, Nicholson identifies as heterosexual. To prepare for the role, he looked back at his own upbringing in an all-Black community in Greensboro, North Carolina. He tried to imagine the deeply rooted homophobia that was considered normal and how it forced people like Lil’ Murda to live in silence, shame, and fear.
You hear stories about people being ‘undercover’ or ‘DL.’ Sometimes homies might have been in prison and may have formed relationships with men and when they get back, they don’t know how to be honest about that.”
he added
He admitted to being nervous at first about taking the role. However, he discussed it with his fiancée and decided to accept it, seeing it as a huge opportunity.
Taking the part I was like, ‘How can we mend these relationships? How can I understand Black gay men, all gay people, and be an ally? These conversations need to happen more in the Black community, and we can get to a place where we accept someone for who they are, simply because of who they are. I’m glad it’s sparking conversation.”

Nicholson mentioned that the messages and reactions he receives online make him happy and provide him with encouragement. He shared that he doesn’t pay much attention to negative comments but instead focuses on the messages that truly matter. Like that one video message he received from a straight-presenting, masculine man, covered in tattoos, coming out. The person in the video acknowledged that such a declaration could have put him at risk of being killed by his peers in his community. This message served as a stark reminder that even though Lil’ Murda and Uncle Clifford are fictional characters, they have a real impact on people’s lives.
It’s very real for [people like the man in the video], and Lil’ Murda too. You’re afraid of losing your life, losing everything. There’s so much people face in this community, and not everybody has the sense of safety to just come out.”
Nicholson said
Although Lil Murda’s sexuality is a bit complicated, the actor said that any type of love is still love, and that’s all that matters.
Love is love. Any type of intimate feelings between two people can be real. Sometimes people just want to have a good time. It’s more common than we think.”
