He was born on June 28, 1966, in Evanston, Illinois, to a prominent acting family. Cusack made his name in Hollywood during the 1980s with roles in films such as Rob Reiner’s “The Sure Thing” and Cameron Crowe’s “Say Anything”. He was soon offered lead characters in movies like “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “Con Air”. In 1997, Cusack lent his voice to Dimitri for the animated film “Anastasia”. The actor also played a pivotal role in the award-winning fantasy film “Being John Malkovich”.
The 2000’s was the age of romantic comedies for Cusack. The actor portrayed the heartthrob in multiple films like “High Fidelity,” “Serendipity,” and “Must Love Dogs”. He also made iconic characters through his work with Roland Emmerich’s disaster film “2012” and his portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe in “The Raven”. Despite the plateau in his popularity, Cusack remained booked and busy until the peak of 2010’s.
With a lengthy career such as Cusack’s, it’s almost impossible to escape controversies. The actor is famous not only for his works, but also for his relationships, activism, and views on marriage and family. Cusack’s fickle relationship with commitment has only fueled long-standing rumors: is John Cusack gay? Let’s find out below.

John Cusack’s Relationships
Believe it or not, Cusack has never been married and he doesn’t have children. It seems ironic considering the actor played the perfect leading man in romantic films for years. However, it doesn’t mean that Cusack hasn’t had his share of relationships. Here’s a brief summary of almost all the women that he has dated over the years.
John Cusack and Melissa Gilbert (1983)
As a newcomer in Hollywood, Cusack first made his mark on the tabloids after he got involved with The Outsiders actress Melissa Gilbert. Unfortunately, Gilbert was still with her long-time love Rob Lowe during this time. The actress admitted in her memoir later on that she had a fling with Cusack.
We [Melissa and John] ended up having a little fling, which I kept from Rob. It was my own private ‘screw you.’ Only John and I ever knew about it. He was very sweet and funny. Funny was a problem for me. Rob’s sense of humor kept me returning to him as much as our physical attraction did.”

It’s still a mystery how Cusack emerged from the scandal unscathed and continued with a flourishing career.
John Cusack and Uma Thurman (1992)
In 1992, Uma Thurman was fresh off her divorce from Gary Oldman when she hooked up with Cusack. The affair was brief and the couple immediately parted ways before the year was over. However, there were talks of reconciliation in 2003 after Cusack and Thurman were spotted having dinner in New York. The rumors didn’t amount to anything and the actor was soon snapped going out with other women.
John Cusack and Minnie Driver (1996)
Cusack met Minnie Driver while filming “Grosse Point Black” when she played his romantic interest. According to rumors, the on-screen chemistry spilt into real life and the pair had a quick fling. But like most of Cusack’s relationships, it quickly fizzled out within the year.
John Cusack and Neve Campbell (1998-2002)
Cusack’s first public and serious relationship was with Scream actress Neve Campbell. The couple dated for four years and was, at that time, the actor’s longest relationship. Some sources stated that his romance with Campbell was the closest that the actor has ever considered marriage. There aren’t many details regarding their relationship, but sadly, Cusack and Campbell separated in December 2002 without any explicit reasons.
John Cusack and Jodi Lyn O’Keefe (2003-2009)
The actor’s next long-term relationship was with Prison Break star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe. Compared to his partnership with Campbell, this one lasted for six years, making it his longest relationship ever. However, the couple called it quits in 2009 when it was apparent that Cusack had no intentions of settling down. Unfortunately, O’Keefe wasn’t able to change his mind.
John Cusack and Rebecca Romjin (2004)
In 2003, Cusack was in the middle of another love triangle, this time with Rebecca Romijn and her husband, John Stamos. According to the rumor mill, the actor played a key role in the couple’s divorce. While Romijn denied the rumors, Cusack has never spoken out regarding this alleged relationship.
John Cusack and Brooke Burns (2010-2011)
Cusack’s last public relationship was with another actress, Brooke Burns. The couple met in 2010 and dated for only a year. Although Burns introduced the actor to his daughter, the relationship was never serious. The pair went their separate ways in 2011 and the Serendipity actor has remained single ever since.

John Cusack on Marriage and Family
Cusack is known for being a forever bachelor, but his supposed phobia towards marriage has fueled speculation that he might be gay. While talking with The Guardian in 2000, the actor stated that he has “never been gay.” He then elaborated on his thoughts regarding the film “Gladiator” being about repressed homosexuality:
Who cares? Russell Crowe is gorgeous. Who cares if it’s gay or not gay, so long as it’s about sex.”
On the other hand, Cusack has been vocal about his views on marriage and family. In an interview with Elle in 2009, the actor summarized his thoughts in seven words:
Society doesn’t tell me what to do.”
It’s worth noting that Cusack has already made his beliefs on the matter clear in the same profile with The Guardian.
I’m not as interested in being married as in coming to some sort of clarity about the whole thing… I’ve been in love maybe two or three times in my life.”
