Gordon Ramsay is one of the most, if not the most, famous chefs in the world. Aside from owning a lot of restaurants in different parts of the planet, this 56-year-old British chef also starred in several reality shows and documentaries.
He founded his restaurant group, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, in 1997, which has been awarded 17 Michelin stars in total throughout his career and currently holds seven.
The powerful celebrity chef was known for his bluntness, fiery temper, strict demeanor, and frequent use of profanity. He became a household name by taking part in reality TV programs about competitive cookery such as “Hell’s Kitchen” (2004), “MasterChef” (2010–present), “MasterChef Junior” (2013–present), “Gordon Behind Bars” (2012), “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back” (2018–2020), and “Next Level Chef” (2022–present).
With an earning of US $70 million, he made it to the Forbes list of highest-earning celebrities in 2020, landing in the 19th spot. However, fans assumed Gordon Ramsay to be gay because of his charismatic and flamboyant personality, as well as his close friendship with other famous gay chefs. The fact that Ramsay has not addressed these rumors publicly only intensified the speculation. So, is Gordon Ramsay gay? Let’s find out.
VOTE: What is Gordon Ramsay’s Sexuality?
On Being Branded as Sexist
Gordon Ramsay had always been known for his “fiery temperament” but he had received darker accusations than that. The BBC, for example, reported that the celebrity chef was branded as sexist for saying that “women should be kept out of professional kitchens”. He was also reported to say that “a woman who’s had her hand up a pigeon’s arse all day” is anything but sexy.
The Guardian has also reported that Ramsay doesn’t like to hire women to work in his kitchen.
The chef also expressed the inconvenience of having female staff because “you can’t get into the staff loo”. And above all, he also thinks having female staff who get pregnant is a big hassle because “How can you shout at someone who’s four months pregnant?”
Ramsay was also under fire in 2019 when old footage from his guest appearance on The Tonight Show resurfaced online. In a joint interview with Colombian and American actress and model Sofia Vergara, the celebrity chef was seen repeatedly mocking her.
“I’m sorry. I never screamed like that in real life, you know,” Vergara said after getting startled at one point of the interview, to which Ramsay replied with, “Only in the bedroom.”
The chef repeatedly talked over her, which made the model say, “Okay, this is my interview,” so he would let her talk without interrupting her.
Vergara was visibly uncomfortable during the whole interview. Ramsay had been repeatedly touching her, too, and she said “No touching!” after he lightly smacked her upper leg.
The social media users who have seen the clips called Ramsay “disrespectful”, “awful”, “entitled”, “toxic”, and “chauvinist”. A Twitter user even said that “Sofia Vergara should have smacked @GordonRamsay’s face & had him charged with sexual harassment & sexual assault.”
On Being Homophobic
It seems like Gordon Ramsay never ran out of reasons to make headlines. For the wrong reasons, that’s it.
The chef was also under fire in 2009 for making homophobic comments about Australian journalist Tracy Grimshaw. Apparently, he called her “a lesbian” and “an ugly pig”. He did it while giving a demonstration at a food show in Melbourne. The homophobic statement wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment thing, since he even showed a picture of a woman with pig features to the audience and said, “That’s Grimshaw. Holy crap. She needs to see a Botox doctor.”
The incident created a buzz online. Blogger and commentator Perez Hilton said that the celebrity chef had definitely crossed the line with those sexist and homophobic remarks. The comments were also described as “an obscene, sexist rant” by FoxNews.com. Ramsay was also called by journalist Wendy Tuohy via the Herald Sun “an outrageous self-promoter who keeps raising the rudeness bar to stay at the top of his game.”
Gordon Ramsay’s Sexuality and Relationships
People were curious about Gordon Ramsay’s sexuality. And to answer the question, nope. The controversial chef is not gay. He is, in fact, married to English TV broadcaster Cayetana Elizabeth Hutcheson, also known as Tana Ramsay. She also wrote several cookery books.
The couple met at a New Year’s Eve party when she was engaged to her ex-boyfriend. They met again a little later when he stored a motorcycle in a flat she shared with a friend and that’s when the romance between them started. They dated for a while before they tied the knot in 1996.
Tana shared with DailyMail that she had polycystic ovarian syndrome which made it difficult for her to have children. The condition affects her fertility. She even had a miscarriage. That’s when they decided to do IVF. The couple had 5 children through the procedure — Megan, 24, twins Holly and Jack, 22, Matilda, 20, and Oscar, 3.
The TV broadcaster and cookery book author also shared that the secret to a long marriage was working hard as a team and finding a balance between kids, home, family, and work.
Things may be going well between the couple. However, their marriage wasn’t a walk in the park, especially during the early years. Their union was, in fact, tested by some infidelity issues.
The chef was romantically linked to author Sarah Symonds in 2008. The “Having an Affair? A Handbook for the Other Woman” author claimed that she was in an on-and-off relationship with Ramsay for seven years while he was married to his wife, Tana. Symonds shared that she met the celebrity chef at a London nightclub in 2001 and that they had been hooking up for seven years. Symonds, who called herself a professional mistress, shared some details about her supposed relationship with Ramsay in her book.
Not only that, Symonds revealed that Ramsay was cheating on his wife, Tana, with two other women aside from her — a married Danish author and an American woman.
Gordon Ramsay denied the allegations. He admitted that they knew each other but denied getting romantically or sexually involved with her.
The controversial chef also said that Symonds was having delusions. He even said that the author was stalking him as she followed him everywhere. It has been reported that Ramsay considered taking matters to court but decided otherwise to spare his family from all the drama.
